Gretchen Kalonji, a UW professor of materials science and engineering, will be following her partner, Denice Denton, dean of the UW's College of Engineering, to sunny California. Denton will leave the UW in February to assume her position as chancellor of UC-Santa Cruz.
Kalonji has accepted the newly created position of director of international strategy development for the University of California's Office of the President. Kalonji will receive $192,000 a year for her work, a salary comparable to her current salary at the UW, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
She will also receive a tenured professorship and up to $50,000 to cover any expenses associated with her transition, The Oakland Tribune reported.
According to the Mercury News Kalonji was placed in the international strategy position because of her experience with the UW Worldwide program, which she created and directs. The program began with a freshmen engineering class condictung joint research with students in Tohuku, Japan, and has since expanded to include universities in China, New Zealand, Nambia, South Africa, Mozambique and Vietnam.
