Hammer time
From his parked patrol car, a UW Police Department officer became alarmed when he heard the sound of metal on metal coming from behind Lewis Hall at 12:50 a.m. Feb. 7.
During a check of the area, the officer spotted two men quickly walking in the opposite direction. The pair ignored the officer as he yelled for them to stop.
When the officer caught up with the individuals, he immediately noticed a large hammer handle sticking out of one man's right pants pocket. When the officer inquired what he was doing with the hammer to make the loud noises the man responded that he had been hitting a light post with it.
The man had broken the glass shroud surrounding the light bulb approximately 12 feet above the ground by throwing the hammer at it.
The man filled out a suspect statement and agreed to pay for the damages he incurred. He stated he was "just having a bad day and made a stupid mistake by breaking the light out."
Mischief at the Wall of Death
While working as a plainclothes officer in the residence halls, a UWPD officer spied three individuals sitting on the Wall of Death on the Burke Gilman Trail behind Terry and Lander hall sparking a lighter at 1:45 a.m. Feb. 3.
The officer approached the group because he thought they might be "smoking narcotics." The officer approached the individuals and asked whether they were using drugs. Members of the group replied that they were not, although the officer did notice a glass pipe on the ground.
When the officer asked if the group had any weapons, one man produced a pellet gun. The officer also noticed a string of fireworks on the ground, which the men explained had been there when they arrived at the location.
The men were given a warning for possession of marijuana and carrying weapons in public spaces.
