Disparities between what University officials said publicly about former Husky football coach Rick Neuheisel's firing and what they told NCAA and Pac-10 investigators during closed hearings were brought to light by Neuheisel's lawyer Bob Sulkin yesterday in court, according to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

According to Sulkin, at a news conference regarding Neuheisel's termination held on June 12, 2003, former Athletic Director Barbara Hedges cited dishonesty as the reason Neuheisel was fired. Sulkin alleged Hedges specifically said Neuheisel lied when first questioned by NCAA investigators about his participation in gambling pools.

Sulkin said that after conference hearings with the Pac-10 and later with the NCAA infraction's committee, Neuheisel's high-stakes gambling was cited as the top reason he was fired.

Yesterday, Karen Nyrop, the assistant state attorney general who handles university legal issues, listed the reasons she gave the Pac-10 for Neuheisel's firing. The reasons did not include Neuheisel's alleged lies to NCAA officials.

Neuheisel is expected to testify as early as Wednesday of this week, according to The P-I.
