FRAUD IN THE NAME OF FREEDOM

At 2 p.m. on Oct. 7, an international student in Hansee Hall received a suspicious telephone call from a cell phone listed as private.

The call, from someone claiming to be Ray Wittmier, the UW Police Department (UWPD) assistant chief, said he was performing an investigation under the Patriot Act and requested that the student answer some questions.

The caller asked, "Have you ever taken drugs; if so, what kinds? Have you ever been arrested? Have you ever been convicted of a felony? And, what are the names of your family members?"

After the student told the caller that he was uncomfortable answering these questions, the caller said he would call him back from a landline. Shortly thereafter "Mr. Wittmier" phoned and continued his questioning.
